BUILDING CULTURES OF PREPAREDNESS WITH TRIBES – Report
TRIBAL COLLEGES IN WASHINGTON CONTACTS
TRIBAL LIAISON CONTACTS – WA STATE GOVERNMENT

The Evergreen State College has consistently enrolled and graduated Indigenous students at a rate that, despite American Indian/Alaska Native students having the highest dropout rates in Washington, exceed other public higher education institutions in the state.

Our Native and Indigenous Programs promote Native student success through a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and public service programs:

  • Native Pathways Program
  • Native American and Indigenous Programs Path of Study
  • Master of Public Administration Program’s Tribal Governance concentration
  • The Longhouse

The Native Student Success decision package requests targeted support for a limited number of key staff and faculty positions that will build on Evergreen’s strengths to increase Native student success as an underserved population.

Pierce College’s Tribal Homeland Security Emergency Management Certificate

Created by Pierce faculty, this map outlines the initial coursework for this career field. It provides you a clear path to complete your certificate by listing a specific set of courses relevant to your program and career. The map is designed with the appropriate number of credits and meets certificate requirements. Courses are organized in a recommended sequence; please schedule accordingly. If a course is unavailable, select the next appropriate course within the sequence. For each course, a purpose statement explains how the content relates to your career field. On this map, there may be instances when you will be required to select a course from several options. Use these purpose statements and notes to choose the course that best aligns with your interests and needs. You will also find action items to complete to assure you progress and graduate on time.

Tribal Homeland Security Emergency Management Certificate Course Map

“Beginning in 2016, Pierce College HSEM engaged with members of the National Tribal Emergency Management Council (NTEMC), led by Executive Director and HSCOE Board Member Lynda Zambrano, to increase awareness of the numerous emergency management challenges for tribes and tribal members working in emergency management.  In 2019, the NTEMC and Pierce College HSEM teamed up to develop and launch the nation’s first comprehensive Tribal HSEM Certificate, focused solely on the indigenous perspective in emergency management.  Ms. Zambrano has now joined the adjunct faculty for Pierce College HSEM and will be teaching one of the seven courses comprising the T-HSEM Certificate: HSEM 215/ Grants and Grants Management in Tribal Emergency Management.  Other courses in the program include HSEM 105 (Concepts, Policy & Doctrine in Tribal EM); HSEM 111 (Incident Management Structures in Indian Country); HSEM 121 (Tribal Planning in EM); and HSEM 205 (Cultural and Historic Preservation in Tribal EM).” – John Pennington, Chair & Associate Professor, Homeland Security Emergency Management

Native and Tribal Community Degree Programs

Two programs at Peninsula College are specifically designed to serve native students, employees or individuals with strong ties to tribal communities:

  • Associate in Arts Bridge, Peninsula College
  • Native Pathways Bachelor of Arts, Evergreen State College

Both programs draw heavily on the Enduring Legacies Native Case Studies model http://nativecases.evergreen.edu/ which seeks to develop culturally relevant curricula and teaching resources.  The case studies share many examples of analytical scholarship related to a broad scope of situations that occur on tribal lands near and far affecting Native people connected to their environs and culture.

The Peninsula College Longhouse Scholarship was established in 2012 to reflect the College’s commitment to further grow and nurture the mission of the Longhouse, and to support the academic success of tribal students.

Each year, the Peninsula College Longhouse Scholarship (a one-year scholarship for tuition and fees) is awarded to one member of each of the local tribes. Students should contact the appropriate Longhouse Scholarship Tribal Contact listed below to request an application and for information on criteria, deadlines, and the selection process.
