SUMMARY:Community Resilience Focus Group
DESCRIPTION:Community Resilience Focus Group\n\n\nMarch 14\, 2025 \n1:00pm – 4:00pm \n“A resilient nation is created and sustained through thriving communities with secure and adaptable social\, economic\, environmental\, housing\, infrastructure\, and institutional systems. Addressing resilience from only one perspective or through only one resilience lens will not be successful.” Nation Resilience Guidance \nCOE HSEM Community RESILIENCE WORK group agenda \nAs 2024\, our “Year of Resilience”\, came to a close\, our Center’s staff\, Volunteers\, and Advisory Board Members at our February 12\, Board meeting\, re-confirmed their commitment to building resilient communities to secure our future.  Demand for talent was just one of many strains across regions and sectors this year\, as geopolitical turmoil and economic uncertainty featured prominently. One way to reduce the impact of all hazards is to enhance resilience within communities. \nOur 21st year\, will be the “Year of Transformational Leadership.”  Today’s leaders continually face challenges of meeting high expectations and adapting to rapid change.  It is critically important to maintain a diverse and educated public.  We need to continue leading with a steadfast commitment to our shared values of equity\, belonging\, and understanding the interdependencies of building capacity and community resilience.  We will need resilient transformational leaders more than ever. \nDate: March 14\, 2025 \nTime: 1: 00pm – 4:00 pm \nCommunity Resilience Focus Group Session \nContact: Linda Crerar\, Director\, lcrerar@pierce.ctc.edu \nRegistration Link \n\n\n\nTime\n\n\n\n\n\n1:00pm -2:15pm\nWelcome & Introductions\nKyle Winslow \nCurry Mayer \nFacilitators \n\n\n10 minutes \nSetting the Stage: \nPurpose of Focus Group  \n \n \n\n\n90 minutes\nBreakout Discussions \n60-90 minutes\n \n \n\n\n30 minutes \nReport Back \nThematic Discussion \n \n \n\n\n30 minutes \nFuture Trends \nClosing Reflections \n \n \n\n\n\nFocus Group Questions\nTHE FOCUS GROUPS SEEK TO COLLECT YOUR THOUGHTS\, IDEAS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BUILDING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE.\nPRIOR TO beginning\, THESE DEFINITIONS OF RESILIENCE MAY HELP SET THE FOUNDATION:\nUnited Nations office of disaster risk reduction: \nThe ability of a system\, community or society exposed to hazards to resist\, absorb\, accommodate\, adapt to\, transform and recover from the effects of a hazard in a timely and efficient manner\, including through the preservation and restoration of its essential basic structures and functions through risk management. \nRiskonnect – Business Continuity consultant: \nResilience management is the process of integrating all of an organization’s protective activities under one\, clear\, management structure. The methodology is subdivided into two areas: readiness and response. \nFrom FEMA: \nNational resilience is a complex topic and building it requires whole community effort. The National Resilience Guidance (NRG) offers a unifying vision of resilience. It provides the principals and steps all communities and organizations can take to increase their resilience in every sector and discipline. The NRG strives to help everyone understand and fulfill their critical roles related to increasing national resilience with the goal of increasing community and national resilience. \nThe National Resilience Guidance: \n\nPromotes a common understanding of resilience.\nEmphasizes the critical relationship between chronic community stressors and acute shocks.\nAddresses the resilience roles of individuals\, organizations\, and all levels of government.\nProvides an actionable approach to resilience planning and implementation.\nIncorporates a community resilience maturity model that walks through concrete steps to build resilience.\n\nThe National Resilience Guidance emphasizes that strengthening resilience requires a collective approach. A resilient nation is created and sustained through thriving communities with secure and adaptable social\, economic\, environmental\, housing\, infrastructure\, and institutional systems. Addressing resilience from only one perspective or through only one resilience lens will not be successful. \n1. Knowledge & Training Needs\n\nWhat foundational knowledge areas should those focused on building community resilience have? (e.g.\, disaster risk reduction\, climate adaptation\, social equity\, or something else?)\nWhat specific training or certifications do you consider essential for professionals entering the field of emergency management?\n\nOr for a position focused on building community resilience?\n\n\nHow should workforce training incorporate equity and inclusion in community resilience efforts?\n\n3. Essential Skills & Abilities\n\nWhat technical skills (e.g.\, GIS mapping\, data analysis\, emergency planning) are becoming more important in community resilience building work?\nWhat soft skills (e.g.\, crisis communication\, leadership\, collaboration) are most critical for success?\nHow important is digital literacy in resilience management\, and what specific tools should professionals be proficient in?\n\n4. Emerging Challenges & Opportunities\n\nWhat new challenges do you see affecting emergency management?\nWhat new challenges do you see affecting community resilience building work?\nHow should workforce training evolve to address:\n\nclimate change\ncybersecurity threats\nthe need for building infrastructure resilience?\n\n\nWhat role should cross-sector collaboration (government\, nonprofits\, and private sector) play in building a resilient workforce? (a workforce contributing to building resilience?)\n\n5. Future-Proofing the Workforce\n\nHow can we attract and retain the next generation of emergency management professionals?\n\nHow do we convey to new emergency management professionals that community resilience building is part of their jobs?\n\n\nWhat learning formats (online\, hybrid\, in-person\, simulations\, etc.) are most effective for training resilience professionals? SUMMARY:PIEPC July Webinar ShakeAlert Evolution: Programming for the Inevitable
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\nOne year after public alerting via WEA and cell phones was available in Washington State\, ShakeAlert continues to evolve. More accurate estimates of magnitude and shaking levels have lead to more confidence in triggering automated actions when strong shaking is imminent. \nWhat changes in ShakeAlert have been implemented and what is in the works? SUMMARY:DID THE MUON HELP DISCOVER NEW PHYSICS?
DESCRIPTION:February 11\, 11:30 am to 1 pm (via Zoom): Dr. David Hertzog\, Director of CENPA and Professor at UW \nDID THE MUON HELP DISCOVER NEW PHYSICS? – This year\, Dr. Hertzog and the Muon g-2 Collaboration team of more than 200 researchers reported a single number representing the magnetism of an elementary particle – the muon. It followed more than 10 years of effort and represented an investment of approximately $100 M. In parallel\, scientists around the world collaborated to predict what Dr. Hertzog and the Muon g-2 Collaboration team would find. They found something different and the world has been buzzing about what it might imply. Dr. Hertzog plans to give a non-experts account of these efforts and let you in on the disciplined process of making measurements at fractions of a part per million in precision. \nTo register: email events@technology-alliance.com

SUMMARY:Respect and Equity in Digital Learning Resources
DESCRIPTION:Respect and Equity in Digital Learning Resources (Thursday\, February 10\, 3:00 – 4:00 pm CT) \nIncreasingly\, students are spending significant amounts of their learning time engaging with digital learning resources and products\, faculty and administrators are increasingly relying on data from those digital learning tools\, and the pandemic has only accelerated the process. Understanding how digital learning resources may increase\, decrease\, or maintain inequity is vitally important for the health of learners\, teachers\, and society. \nIn this talk we will look at digital learning resources or more broadly educational technology (ed-tech) through the lens of diversity\, equity and inclusion. We will take a holistic approach to DEI in education technology\, starting with why it is necessary to focus deeply on equity\, and why it matters at every level in the organization and in every step from idea to delivery and use of the digital learning resource. \nWhat you can expect: \n\nA high level talk that will explain all terms and jargon\nA quick look at the potential promise offered by digital learning resources and the algorithms (we will define those) within them\nSome real world examples of what can go wrong when respect and equity aren’t built into products. Bring popcorn and kleenex.\nAn approach to ensure digital learning resources work for diverse students\, inclusively\, and equitably.\nA sneak peak at our new Equity Accelerator course for educational technology developers.\n\nWhat you will take away: \n\nA deeper understanding of why a holistic approach to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion within organizations producing digital learning resources is critical.\nA high level understanding of the algorithms within digital learning tools and why they need to be fair\, accountable\, and transparent (and what that jargon means).\nSamples and pointers to tools for infusing equity into the design process for digital learning resources.\nQuestions to ask about equity when considering digital learning resources.
