DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\nOne year after public alerting via WEA and cell phones was available in Washington State\, ShakeAlert continues to evolve. More accurate estimates of magnitude and shaking levels have lead to more confidence in triggering automated actions when strong shaking is imminent. \nWhat changes in ShakeAlert have been implemented and what is in the works? How is ShakeAlert helping to protect critical infrastructure today? \n\nBill Steele has directed the Educational Outreach and Communications Program for the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) at the University of Washington\, since 1993. He works closely with news reporters and filmmakers to provide hazards information and coordinate scientist involvement in development accurate and interesting news reports and documentaries. \nBill also serves as the Washington State Regional Coordinator for ShakeAlert.  He collaborates with companies and public agencies to identify opportunities to implement automated loss reduction actions triggered by ShakeAlert. He is also working to document how EEW can be used to reduce injuries and economic losses during an earthquake and speed recovery. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nRegister Here

It followed more than 10 years of effort and represented an investment of approximately $100 M. In parallel\, scientists around the world collaborated to predict what Dr. Hertzog and the Muon g-2 Collaboration team would find. They found something different and the world has been buzzing about what it might imply. DESCRIPTION:Respect and Equity in Digital Learning Resources (Thursday\, February 10\, 3:00 – 4:00 pm CT) \nIncreasingly\, students are spending significant amounts of their learning time engaging with digital learning resources and products\, faculty and administrators are increasingly relying on data from those digital learning tools\, and the pandemic has only accelerated the process. Understanding how digital learning resources may increase\, decrease\, or maintain inequity is vitally important for the health of learners\, teachers\, and society. \nIn this talk we will look at digital learning resources or more broadly educational technology (ed-tech) through the lens of diversity\, equity and inclusion. We will take a holistic approach to DEI in education technology\, starting with why it is necessary to focus deeply on equity\, and why it matters at every level in the organization and in every step from idea to delivery and use of the digital learning resource. \nWhat you can expect: \n\nA high level talk that will explain all terms and jargon\nA quick look at the potential promise offered by digital learning resources and the algorithms (we will define those) within them\nSome real world examples of what can go wrong when respect and equity aren’t built into products. Bring popcorn and kleenex.\nAn approach to ensure digital learning resources work for diverse students\, inclusively\, and equitably.\nA sneak peak at our new Equity Accelerator course for educational technology developers.\n\nWhat you will take away: \n\nA deeper understanding of why a holistic approach to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion within organizations producing digital learning resources is critical.\nA high level understanding of the algorithms within digital learning tools and why they need to be fair\, accountable\, and transparent (and what that jargon means).\nSamples and pointers to tools for infusing equity into the design process for digital learning resources.\nQuestions to ask about equity when considering digital learning resources.

February 28 marked the 20th anniversary of the Nisqually earthquake. Are we more prepared now than we were twenty years ago for the next big one?\n\nWhy is it so difficult to get ready?\nAre Emergency Managers the right people to carry the preparedness message?\nIf not\, why not?\nIf not\, who is?\n\nStudents will receive a free copy of Deb Moller’s book:\n“Get Ready – How to Prepare for and Stay Safe After a Pacific Northwest Earthquake.”\n\n\nInstead of charging for this workshop\, we ask people to donate a minimum of $25.00 to the Jamye Wisecup Scholarship Fund to help support students in the all-hazards emergency management career pathway programs. In March\, we note the 20th anniversary of the Nisqually earthquake. \nIs getting people to prepare an impossible pipe dream or a worthy goal? Why is it so difficult?
